We are doing a trip to Botswana in our X-Trail. I was
wondering whether it would be advisable to install any
protective skid plates etc as apparently our biggest problem
will be the huge "middel-mannetjies". Any advice?

Go and buy a Nissan Patrol, then take the diffs out of the Patrol and put them under the X-Trail..that will cure most of the problems with the X-Trail.....



OK, obviously I'm kidding.



No pictures of your car, no help or assistance.

But since this is your first post:

YES, put as much protective stuff under and in front as you can, also take some 90% shadenet with to cover the front of the grill. Make use of nice long cable-ties to tie that in front of the radiator. Grass seeds and grass bits cause engine overheating and in extreme conditions will catch light and burn your car out.

Inspect the car EVERY day, underneath and also inside the engine compartment. Check engine oil and coolant EVERY day.

Have you done any suspension lifts or mods?

A skidplate is the first thing to put on a x trail, nissan says 200mm ground clearance but i'm sure it's less. BUT a skidplate makes you lose even more clearance so biger wheels or suspension lift will be next.

Then you think, maybe i should have bought a proper 4x4 in the first place.
