My Nissan X-Trail 4x4 2.5 CVT currently has the standard 215/60R17 Dunlop tyres.

Any advice on 17" all terrain tyres?

I have been quoted Kuhmo 235/65R17 KL51 - R9200 for 4! These tyres seem to be more road orientated and, I must be honest, I didn't realise the tyres would cost that much!

I do quite a bit of dirt road driving, I tow most weekends (horsebox) and go off roading once every 2 months or so.

Go BF Goodrich AT in 225/70-17

http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-selector/name/all-terrai n-t-a-ko-tires

What do you get?

- nice aggressive tread pattern
- 100,000 km plus on a set
- good sidewall and bead protection

Alternative:

See if you can use 16-inch rims on the X-Trail: gives a MUCH wider option on tyres and the prices are better......

Thanks for the advice - will there not be a problem with the warranty if I go so much bigger? That tyre would result in additonal 29mm on the diameter of the tyre. My car is still under warranty until march 2012.

Sarah, the X-Trail was originally sold with 16-inch rims and 215/65-16 tyres.
So for Nissan to have issues with warranty regarding a tyre size......
But it is worth asking them and getting an answer in writing regarding the RECOMMENDED tyre sizes covered by warranty.

The 225/70-17 tyres will only be 10mm wider: that is 5mm either side....

The real issue is maybe the diameter:

215/60-17 = 690mm (27.2 inches)
225/70-17 = 747mm (29.4 inches)

So that means a radius increase of 1.2 inches.
I honestly doubt there will be a fitment issue, but it's worth asking a professional fitment shop like Tiger Wheel and Tyre.

By the way:

235/65-17 Kuhmo = 737mm = 29.1 inches......

So if these fit, the 225/70-17 BFGs will also probably fit.

You just have to find out about warranty issues now.

I just asked Nissan SA to confirm in writing that the 235/65R17 tyre size will not affect the warranty of the vehicle. They came back saying they will not as changing the profile will make the speed sensors turn at a different speed to the diff sensors and cause transfer case damage.

I am waiting to hear if 16 inch rims with 215/70 all terrain tyres will be acceptable.

Sarah that's a TYPICAL case of a person looking at a female and blatantly talking rubbish.

The size of the tyre will affect NOTHING except your speedometer will (unknown to you OR any sensor) read incorrectly by about 7%!!!!

WHOOPPPEEE!!!! if one considers most speedos under-indicate by 7% ANYWAY.

This guy is talking BLATANT rubbish: the ONLY time and I repeat the ONLY time this could happen is IF YOU DRIVE WITH MISMATCHED TYRES ON OPPOSITE SIDES!

By this, I mean if you use a 215 on the left and a 225 or 235 on the right, or if you use 215 on both front wheels and 235 on both rear wheels.

And this should be acceptable anyway within 10%.

My goeiste, die dinge wat Nissan sal kwytraak.....
