we have a 2005 mazda 3 ...cant remember if it is the active or dynamic.... but its the top of the range 1.6, with all the bells and whistles. I must say that this was a very sexy looking car in its price range, at the time. From interior to sleek flowing lines. The ride is brilliant.... sticks like ...... to a blanket. The only faults I can find with this car is that the 1.6 is a little under powered if you have the aircon on and want to get the car moving, but once moving.... no problem at all. the second fault is when driving your left knee resting on the centre consol gets fairly warm (Mazda says that that is normal....) other than that, what a great car..... 7.9L/100km in 99% peak hour stop/start traffic driving (Alberton to Edenvale....+/- 30 Km or 1 hour... )

lancebregman - Thats a very old thread you dragged up...
If you can find them, my recommendation for the best value for money as a "car" is: 1999-2001 VW Polo 1.6 (pref Classic as then it hasn't been abused by Boy Racers) <150 000km Full Service History with Agents or reputable garage Up country (although they don't rust easy)
Reasons: Low purchase prices <R45k, low maintenence costs, good economy with decent power/speed, after 2001 model (newer shape) had gearbox problems on some models, if need more power/speed then harder shocks with Dastek chip from SAC and open up the exhaust, Interior and boot space is great.
My Polo can tow my old heavy caravan just as well (and sometimes quicker) than most purpose built "tow" vehicles.
Offered my wife a R300k replacement but she refuses to let go of the Polo, and I still get a thrill out of driving it every now and then.
Biggest concern is always maintenance costs, which is why I have stayed with VW for years... Now if they made a decent, affordable & reliable 4x4 I might not be driving a Nissan to do the job!

Danie - That depends on the VW! Same reason I didn't get a late model Nissan... Most of the computer stuff is terrible for true 4x4, or even pretending to be reliable like older cars... Who here can fix anything related to a computer box??? And I am a Electronic engineer by trade, but unless you have the diagrams/plans you will be stuffed in the bush or even in the cane fields!
Quickest thing I learnt about cars/vehicles, even well before my current 4x4 fetish, is that you have to be able to fix things in the field with basic knowledge... Computer box fails then you are FUBAR, no matter how good you might be at other skills...
4x4 to me is about being able to travel anywhere without restriction... Forget electronic stuff, get back to basics....
If you want a car to drive on the road then get something to drive on the road, you want a 4x4, then get something that can handle 4x4! Unless desperate and where work/fun meet, then don't get a combo vehicle! Think about it, do you try get your 4x4 to be a skiboat on the dam? Do you get your 4x4 to be a Porsche beating dragger on a 1/4 mile?
Get the right thing for the job and get the right thing for the right job... Even if it includes a Porche to get to work and back...
I am not a hypocrite, I own a Volvo S40 (which is a terrible car for anything else but a business requirement for what I use it for, I will never recommend anyone else get one as it it terrible for many reasons), but that car is a brilliant business vehicle for what I use it for... But that is it, I use a reasonable vehicle for my personal use...
Make it realistic, buying a combo vehicle to do both sides of your lifestyle is impractical unless they are closely related... And it is expensive!
This is more than my 2c worth, sometimes you have to be realistic and chase certain ideals out your mind... If you like 4x4, then buy a 4x4 for that purpose. I got lucky and due to my work was able to "cross-pollenate?", but I am also a speed freak on bikes (I have had to sell my GP race bike due to work), but I have to let that go for now... Just geat what you need, and buy your toys seperate... You will hate the world if you have to sell everything at once...
I have exploded in retoric above, but none of the info is false... Be very careful in what you get, make sure it covers at least 2 of you needs, and then make a plan to have fun... I have never been on a major 4x4 event or mission, but the simple truth is that I tackle my local canefields and dongas as much as possible to appreciate the vehicle that I have... Even a 4x4 pavement jumper needs to get proven sometimes, and the enjoyment that you will get out of that will possibly make the rest of your life seem indifferent (adrenaline is awesome!).
My rant is over... At the end of the day you have to get what you want...
