Botswana& Zambia - April/May 2009

The Route in Brief: Cape Town – Vryburg – Ghanzi – Moremi – Savute – Chobe River Front – Ngonye Falls – Livingstone – Northern Kafue National Park – Livingstone – Tsodilo Hills – Okavango Western Pan Handle – Ghanzi – Vryburg – Cape Town. Approximately 9 400km.

Chapter 1 – The Great Trek North

Despite our best efforts to manage things differently, the two weeks prior to leaving on our annual ....

We arrived at Karee Krans just after 11h00 and pitched the tent before we had lunch.

Karee Krans have 3 4x4 trails numbered A ,B and C. As A is the longest so we decided to do B first as we where still waiting for one of our friends.

"A" and "B" start at the same point up an incline that is very rocky with an axle twister.

After turning right on the "B" route you ....

We left Kempton Park at 05h00 and met up with Flip Breedt in his Navara just before we left the N3 for Frankfort. Past Frankfort we carried on to Heilbron to have breakfast at the Wit Lantern.

After a hearty breakfast we headed for Petrus Steyn and took the Tarzan road to Bethlehem. This road is mostly gravel with stretches of beautiful Kosmos.

Four of us , Mac McMenamin, Tony Page, Leon du Toit and myself, Kobus Pienaar, left Pretoria around 11h00 on Sunday the 1st of March on the way to Seronga to deliver 500 Tswana Bibles to Delta Cross Ministries.

We stopped just before the Skilpadshek border post for a late lunch and proceeded through the border post into Botswana with no problems. Mac arranged accommodation for ....

Dis 04h00 en ons staan op met groot opgewondenheid om gou die laaste paar goed te pak. Na gister se pak was ek oortuig dat omtrent alles behalwe die kleretasse en koue goed reeds gepak was – min het ek geweet hoeveel plek die kos, klere, cameras, skoene en noodhulptas gaan opvat. Maar alles is gelaai en ons ry net na 05h00.

Botswana Over landing in July 1976 Written September 2008 by Rod Crompton This is a story about a Botswana trip done more than 30 years ago. We spent one month doing an over landing adventure in Botswana including visits to Nxai Pan, Maun, Okavango Swamps, Moremi and Savute. Its also probably a lesson about how not to go over landing in Botswana – today, or as they say “don’t try this at home”. I don’t know if over landing holidays of the kind you see advertised today ....

The idea of this trip started 6 months prior to our departure. Being the first trip of this nature a lot of research and planning went into the route. Thinking back I figure that maybe the planning and bookings were to rigid, leaving no room to change plans as we travelled. Won’t make that mistake again!

We travelled with a Nissan HardBody 2.4i 4x2 and an Echo 3 off-road ....

Much has been said about the draglink and idler arm and the wear experienced offroad especially when the vehicle is lifted up front. I have spent many Rands and time at Riaan’s wheel alignment trying to sort this mess out. Out of desperation and exasperation we tried many different methods and all we could find off the Internet and tried some mods over the years. Whether it is on a day trip or an extended overlanding trip, the air compressor is required to reinflate the tyres after traversing certain terrain. Letting out air does not only give a bigger footprint but is also much "softer" on the environment. A further benefit is that a vehicle with lowered tyre pressures needs to labour far less due to the better traction and flotation in sandy conditions. Air compressors are also ....

Equipping the Patrol for overlanding has been a considerable challenge. Information is scarce or non-existing in most cases. Most of the local suppliers have very little or no experience in the vehicle, which makes it difficult to find accessories or good advise.
